Why We use Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is one of the oldest minerals used in skincare, and one of the most versatile. It's a soft white powder, naturally occurring, that's used in everything from diaper creams to mineral makeup. But not all zinc oxide is the same. The two main types are nano (particles smaller than 100 nanometers) and non-nano (particles larger than 100 nanometers). Non-nano is the form we use in Reef Tallow, and the difference between the two is significant for both your skin and the water you swim in.

Particle Type Size Reef Impact
Nano Zinc Oxide Under 100 nm Can be absorbed by coral
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide Over 100 nm Considered reef-friendlier

Non-nano particles sit on top of the skin rather than penetrating it, which is exactly what you want from a mineral ingredient. They're also large enough that coral and marine organisms are less likely to absorb them when products eventually rinse off in the ocean. This is the connection that gave our brand its name. The ingredient choice that's safer for your skin barrier is also the choice that's gentler on the reef. We didn't have to compromise to find an alternative to nano versions; we just had to pick the form that respected both ecosystems.
