In 2019, my wife and I left our jobs to travel the world and learn to scuba dive. Beneath the surface, while falling in love with the underwater world, we found there were large sections of wildlife suffering. There was sobering refrain from dive masters across the globe: “You should have seen it 10 years ago.” Fewer fish, dying reefs, and more trash.

We quickly realized how fragile underwater ecosystems are, and how human activity, including the products we use daily, contributes to their decline. Coral reefs, living filter feeders, absorb everything in their environment. Chemical-laden sunscreens and skincare products clog their systems, leading to bleaching and death. Today, over 448 million ounces of these harmful compounds enter the ocean each year.
